Shielding Employees’ Guidance: Important Changes Ahead

As the UK continues to grapple with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the government has announced significant changes to its shielding guidance. These alterations will have a substantial impact on over two million clinically vulnerable people in England who have been advised to shield at home during the crisis. Let’s take a closer look at what these changes mean for shielding employees and their entitlements.

The Current Situation

For the past few months, approximately 2.2 million people in England with severe underlying health conditions have been following strict shielding guidelines. This group includes individuals undergoing chemotherapy for cancer and those with severe respiratory conditions such as cystic fibrosis, severe asthma and severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Under the current regulations, shielding employees have been entitled to various benefits, including:

  • Free government food boxes
  • Priority for supermarket delivery slots
  • Statutory sick pay of £95.85 per week (if employed and earning an average of at least £120 per week)

Upcoming Changes to Shielding Guidance

The government has outlined a phased approach to relaxing shielding measures. Here’s what you need to know:

From 6 July 2020

Shielding individuals will no longer be required to stay at home. Instead, they will be permitted to spend time outdoors in groups of up to six people, including those from outside their household. However, it’s crucial to maintain social distancing rules during these interactions.

From 1 August 2020

This date marks the most significant changes for shielding employees:

  1. Return to Work: Shielding employees can return to their workplaces, provided they are ‘coronavirus secure’. This means employers must implement measures such as social distancing and provide adequate hand-washing facilities.
  2. End of Statutory Sick Pay: As a result of the return-to-work guidance, shielding employees will no longer be eligible for statutory sick pay solely based on their shielding status.
  3. Cessation of Free Food Boxes: The government will stop providing free food box deliveries.

It’s worth noting that shielding individuals will continue to receive priority for supermarket delivery slots and can still access assistance with shopping, medication, phone calls and transport to medical appointments.

What This Means for Shielding Employees

If you’re a shielding employee, these changes will likely have a significant impact on your daily life and finances. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Workplace Safety: While you’re expected to return to work, it’s essential to ensure your workplace is safe. If you have concerns, speak with your employer to discuss any necessary adjustments.
  2. Financial Implications: The end of statutory sick pay for shielding may affect your income. It’s crucial to review your financial situation and plan accordingly.
  3. Continued Support: Although some services are changing, you’ll still have access to priority delivery slots and other forms of assistance.
  4. Mental Health: The transition back to work and increased social interaction may be challenging. Don’t hesitate to seek support if you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed.

Regional Variations

It’s important to note that these changes apply specifically to England. The devolved nations have different approaches:

  • Scotland: Shielding advice currently remains in place until 31 July 2020 for around 180,000 people.
  • Wales: Approximately 130,000 people are advised to shield until 16 August 2020.
  • Northern Ireland: Shielding guidance will end on 31 July 2020, in line with England.

However, these dates may be subject to change based on the progression of the pandemic in each nation.

Other Considerations

While the focus of these changes is on shielding employees, it’s worth noting that statutory sick pay will still be available in certain circumstances:

  • If you become ill with COVID-19 or any other condition that prevents you from working
  • If you’re self-isolating due to the NHS Test and Trace system

Moving Forward

As we navigate these changes, it’s crucial for shielding employees to stay informed and take proactive steps to protect their health and wellbeing. Here are some suggestions:

  • Keep up to date with the latest government guidance
  • Communicate openly with your employer about any concerns or required adjustments
  • Continue to practice good hygiene and social distancing measures
  • Seek financial advice if you’re worried about the impact of these changes on your income
  • Look after your mental health and reach out for support if needed

The easing of shielding measures represents a significant shift in the UK’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. While it offers more freedom for those who have been shielding, it also brings new challenges. By staying informed and taking appropriate precautions, shielding employees can navigate this transition safely and confidently.

These changes are based on the current understanding of the virus and its spread. Should the situation change, the government may revise its guidance. Stay vigilant, stay safe and don’t hesitate to seek help if you need it.
