Exploring Local Attractions: The Staycation Revolution
Lately, the concept of a staycation has taken centre stage in the travel world. As more people are being forced to holiday closer to home due to national and international travel restrictions, we’re witnessing a surge in local tourism that’s breathing new life into our own communities. Let’s explore why staycations are becoming increasingly popular and how you can make the most of your local area.
What Exactly is a Staycation?
A staycation, simply put, is a holiday spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions. The latter is the original and true meaning of ‘staycation’, but the former has been adopted as a more popular meaning. It’s a portmanteau of “stay” and “vacation”, and it’s rapidly becoming a favoured holiday option for many.
The Appeal of A Holiday At Home
1. Cost-Effective
One of the most significant advantages of taking a domestic holiday is its cost-effectiveness. By eliminating expensive flights and foreign accommodation, you can save a substantial amount of money. This doesn’t mean compromising on quality, though. The funds you save can be redirected towards luxurious local experiences or even extending your holiday.
2. Time-Efficient
Staycations also offer the benefit of more time actually enjoying your holiday. Without the need for long-haul flights or navigating unfamiliar transport systems, you can maximise your leisure time. This efficiency is particularly appealing for those with limited holiday allowance.
3. Eco-Friendly
For the environmentally conscious, staycations present a more sustainable travel option. By reducing long-distance travel, particularly air travel, you can significantly lower your carbon footprint. It’s a simple way to enjoy a holiday while being kinder to our planet.
4. Supporting Local Economies
Choosing a holiday at home means investing in your local economy. The money you spend stays within your community, supporting local businesses and potentially helping to create jobs. It’s a win-win situation: you get a great holiday and your local area benefits too.
Making the Most of Your Domestic Break
Rediscover Your Local Area
It’s easy to overlook the attractions right on our doorstep. Take time to research what your local area has to offer. You might be surprised by the hidden gems you discover. From historical sites to natural wonders, there’s often more to explore than we realise.
Try New Experiences
A vacation at home is the perfect opportunity to try something new. Always wanted to learn surfing? Find a local beach and book some lessons. Interested in pottery? Look for workshops in your area. By trying new activities, you can make your break just as exciting as any foreign trip.
Indulge in Local Cuisine
One of the joys of travel is trying new food. Apply this same principle to your staycation. Seek out restaurants you’ve never visited before, or try cooking with local, seasonal ingredients. You might discover a new favourite dish right in your own backyard.
Create a Holiday Atmosphere at Home
If you’re staying at home for your staycation, make an effort to create a holiday atmosphere. This could involve redecorating a room, setting up a home spa or creating an outdoor cinema in your garden. The key is to make your environment feel different and special.

Planning Your Perfect Holiday at Home
Research and Book in Advance
Just as you would for any holiday, do your research and book activities in advance. This ensures you don’t miss out on popular attractions and can help spread the cost of your vacation.
Disconnect from Work
To truly enjoy your break, it’s crucial to disconnect from work. Set an out-of-office email, turn off work notifications and resist the urge to check in. Treat your domestic vacation with the same respect you would a foreign holiday.
Be a Tourist in Your Own Town
Adopt a tourist mindset. Visit your local tourist information centre, pick up some brochures and see your area through fresh eyes. You might discover attractions you never knew existed.
Mix Relaxation with Adventure
Balance your staycation with both relaxing and adventurous activities. Perhaps spend a day at a local spa, followed by a day trying a new outdoor activity. This variety will make your break feel fulfilling and well-rounded.
The Future of Staycations
As we become more aware of the environmental impact of travel and the richness of experiences available closer to home, staycations are likely to remain popular. They offer a sustainable, cost-effective way to enjoy quality time off whilst also supporting local communities.
Moreover, domestic holidays encourage us to appreciate the beauty and culture of our own country. They remind us that sometimes the best adventures are right on our doorstep.
So, next time you’re planning a holiday, why not consider a staycation? You might just find that the perfect getaway is closer than you think. After all, there’s no place like home – especially when you’re seeing it with new eyes.

I think it’s great that people are exploring their local attractions much more since the pandemic. It’s one of the few good things to come out of it. Also more people are holidaying in their own country rather than going abroad and again that’s fantastic for domestic tourism businesses. So many places closed down during Covid so it’s nice to see some of them bouncing back now and even expanding due to high demand. We need to support British businesses whenever we can.
We just had a staycation for the Easter holidays and it was brilliant! We spent half the time at a local holiday camp (Butlins but not) and the other half at home doing different things. We camped out in the garden for a few nights, which was surprisingly fun and not as uncomfortable as I anticipated. The children loved it and we’ve made some amazing memories. We have plans to do more like this in the summer holidays!
