Maintaining gutters and fascias

Why Regular Cleaning of Your Home’s Gutters and Fascias Should Be on Your Winter To-Do List

As the UK shifts from the golden hues of autumn into the chill of winter, our homes are presented with new upkeep challenges. One of the most overlooked but crucial jobs during wintertime is the maintenance of gutters and fascias. Keeping up to date with this task will help to protect our homes from water damage, yet it is often neglected until something goes wrong – and by then it’s too late and will likely result in a costly repair bill.

Keeping your gutters and fascias clean doesn’t just safeguard your home; it can also save you from unexpected expenses and stress. Let’s investigate why this simple maintenance task is so important and how companies like Xtra Property Maintenance can take care of the hassle for you.

The Hidden Dangers of Neglected Gutters and Fascias

At first glance, gutters and fascias may not seem like they need much attention. But as leaves, moss and debris accumulate, they can create a ticking time bomb for your home.

Blocked Gutters Can Lead to Costly Repairs

When gutters become clogged, they can’t handle heavy rainfall. The resulting overflow can cause them to split, collapse or sag. Repairing damaged PVC guttering costs significantly more than maintaining it, with prices for repairs soaring up to £180 per metre compared to an average of £30 for new installations, according to Check a Trade in 2024.

However, the real problem isn’t just the gutters themselves. An article on The Bolton News explains how clogged gutters can lead to water damage. For example, overflowing water can seep into your walls or roof, leading to dampness, mould and structural issues – problems that are far more expensive and time-consuming to fix.

Roof Damage and Ice Dams

Clogged gutters don’t just put your walls at risk – they can also wreak havoc on your roof. Overflowing water can back up onto the roof, causing leaks or even rotting the wooden beams that support it. In winter, the situation worsens with ice dams. These form when trapped water freezes, adding extra weight to the gutters and further damaging your roof.

Unwanted Guests in Your Gutters

Debris-filled gutters make an ideal home for pests like birds and insects. These unwelcome visitors aren’t just a nuisance; they can cause further damage by chewing through fascias or building nests that exacerbate blockages.

Is Professional Gutter Cleaning Worth It?

Cleaning gutters and fascias might seem like a simple DIY task but it’s far trickier – and riskier – than it appears. Climbing a ladder and working at height in wet and windy winter conditions is hazardous and many homeowners lack the tools to thoroughly clean gutters and fascias.

This is where professional services like Xtra Property Maintenance come into their own. They use industry-standard equipment and safe, effective methods to ensure your gutters and fascias are left spotless. No more precarious ladder balancing or wondering if you’ve missed a spot – letting professionals handle the job not only saves you time but also gives you peace of mind knowing it’s been done correctly.

I only just recently bought my first house so have no idea about all the maintenance jobs etc I will need to do. This was really useful information for me, thanks mate!

I used to run a window cleaning company and one of the services we offered was gutter and fascia cleaning. It’s surprising and probably quite worrying how few homeowners get these cleaned but as your post explains they really are an essential part of annual homecare.

My neighbour had a nightmare with their gutters because they were blocked. They didn’t realise and so when their drains kept overflowing they couldn’t work out why. Fast forward to a hefty bill later and they now clean them out regularly! We live near a small woodland so it’s par for the course. They’d never lived near trees before so it never occurred to them that the leaves and other debris could cause such problems.

Hello, gutter and fascia cleaning specialist here! Stopping by to say this is a great post full of useful and relevant info, nice work!
Late summer and autumn are my busiest times of year, although it’s important to remember that gutters and fascias can be cleaned at any time of year, the crucial thing is to do it regularly and consistently. Either do it yourself or let a professional like me take the strain, either way it’s well worth it!

  5. It’s 2025, there must be an easier and more effective way of keeping gutters and fascias in order, surely? So many house-related tasks seem to still be so manual, so is it that that’s just how they are or is it that it’s not in the interest of tradies etc for there to be more workable solutions for homeowners? I would love to know, please chime in?

Like many others, I had to learn the hard way about this. My gutters got blocked as we have a lot of birds around here and apparently they love gutters as a place for their nests. The nests get destroyed in the winter due to the bad weather so it all gets washed down the gutter and of course clogs up, causing blockages and flooding. So expensive to get sorted so it is better to keep on top of it in the first place. I am trying out some of those hedgehog gutter brushes and so far so good but we’ve yet to hit the windy season so time will tell.
